Throughout history, music has been used in ritual, healing, and as a way to communicate and make meaning. From healing songs to work songs, music has been a part of our human evolution.
Music therapy is a relatively new field that has its roots in the work of visiting musicians who performed for wounded soldiers hospitalized after World Wars I and II. After it was observed by the doctors and nurses at the hospitals that their patients were truly benefiting from the music, the first music therapy program was established at Michigan State University in 1944.
Until the recent advances in neuroscience and neuroimaging technology, however, the effects of music couldn’t be fully understood. Today we now know that music activates the entire brain, which can affect us physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Today, music therapy is a recognized health care profession in which a trained music therapy professional (MT-BC, ACMT, CMT, RMT) uses evidence-based music interventions to address individualized physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual goals.
Music therapy interventions can be used to:
- promote wellness
- manage stress
- alleviate pain
- express feelings
- enhance memory
- improve communication
- promote physical rehabilitation
